Children in the kitchen: safety decalogue

In the post in which we talked about how cooking was a means to educate children, we saw that a good way to teach children to eat healthy was by cooking with them. The little ones helping us to prepare food makes them feel motivated to try new foods that he has prepared himself, so we must encourage them to take pride in a better or worse job done.

To begin to get used to being around the stove, children can do tasks such as washing fruits and vegetables, chopping some foods with your hands, mixing and kneading foods, spreading, peeling fruits without a knife (bananas, tangerines), remove waste and clean up the countertop, order the ingredients to use on the table, control the times ... etc.

But in the kitchen one of the rules that must reign es safety, even more so if the little ones are collaborating. So we go there with the 10 basic safety rules for little cooks.

1. Prevent children from driving electrical appliances and plugsespecially if your hands are wet.

2. Be aware of the kitchen heat sources as well as boiling liquids to prevent children from burning. If we cannot accidentally avoid it, as a first measure it is recommended to keep the burned area of the skin under cold water.

3. Make sure the children do not pour liquids directly on the fire, because they can ignite it, as well as other flammable objects such as wooden utensils or kitchen towels. The same goes for pouring water over hot oil.

4. Children should not handle knives or other sharp and pointed objects, so those in charge of cutting and peeling with knives will be the adults.

5. Be careful with these objects when place them in the cutlery tray. They must be upside down to prevent children from reaching for any utensil and, upturned knives among other pots, from being accidentally cut.

6. Do not put cooked food on a plate or table where there has been raw food. Always use a clean plate to avoid the spread of bacteria.

7. Always direct the tails or handles of the pots and pans towards the back from the ceramic hob or burner. Because of a slap or because of the children's short stature, we can hit them and overturn the pots with hot food.

8. We must never allow children to fry or put food in hot oil, I could splash them more than necessary because of the fear that the sizzling of the oil could cause them.

9. Insist the children on the cleaning food before preparing them as well as our own, washing your hands with soap and warm water before handling food, picking up your hair or cleaning the countertops from the kitchen.

10. When handling food with their hands, warns children not to suck their fingers or put their hands in their mouths. This is especially important with raw food, such as dough with eggs or meat and fish. Every time they handle a food they must washing hands with water and soap and only afterwards dry them with a cloth.

Obviously, practice makes us come up with many more rules, so do not hesitate to warn us about them through the comments of Recetín or through the Facebook group.
