Autumn fruits, in all their splendor (I)

Last night we turned the clock back one hour and tomorrow begins the last week of October. The children are already fully involved in the school routine. We are in the middle of autumn. And what better way to enjoy it than by taking the fruits that are typical of this season. Eating fruits in season means eating the fruit with the most flavor and the best nutritional properties, something that is convenient for the health of children in a few months in which they must already perform one hundred percent and in which the cold, colds and flu begin to emerge.

But taking seasonal fruits, we also take care of the environment, since they require less effort for their cultivation and harvest. On the other hand, it goes without saying that if we buy fruits of the time at the market we will save some euros.

As we can see, all are advantages. We are therefore going to know what are the typical fruits of autumn.

We start with the grape. The grape harvest is carried out as soon as the ripening stage is possible, which happens between mid-September and the end of November. Therefore, fresh seasonal grapes can be tasted during the fall months. Regarding their nutritional value, they are rich in sugars, which makes the grape a more caloric fruit than the rest, although consumed in moderation does not pose any problem.

Grapes also have vitamins such as folic acid and B6, and minerals such as potassium and magnesium. Various substances with recognized antioxidant properties such as tannins and polyphenols abound in grapes.

As an obstacle for children to consume them, they are skin and seeds, but with patience they can be cleaned perfectly and thus not renounce the excellence of the grape.

We continue with the persimmon. It is a tropical fruit of Chinese origin, originally characterized by a harsh taste that set young and old alike. But little by little varieties of persimmons have been appearing that are sweeter and softer to eat, of a similar texture the peach and the apple, like the persimon and the sharoni. Anyway, it is an ideal fruit to make jam or to beat as a drink or as a mousse.

Speaking of its nutritional value, persimmon has a high water content. Like grapes, it provides a significant amount of carbohydrates, so taken in the correct amounts it can be a source of energy for children. Regarding its content of vitamins and minerals, provitamin A or beta-carotene stands out, which gives it its characteristic color, vitamin C and B, and potassium.

And up to here you can read. In the following post we will continue talking about autumn fruits. So there is no excuse for children not to start, if they have not already done so, to consume grapes and persimmons.
